My 1911 is with the smith for a little tweaking. I asked for other suggestions, he suggested replacing the current ambi safety with a better designed/quality ambi or a single side safety. I intend to use this gun in IDPA and USPSA single stack. Should I stick with the ambi or...

Ambi for those draw and transfer to weak hand situations. They're rare but they do occur.

Depending on the safety, I have inadvertently pushed on the "ambi" side ... not enough to engage it ... but enough to make me wonder if I did ... at which, my preference is to not have one.

The only exception would be if I were drawing weak-hand.

There's no such thing as a weak hand draw in USPSA or IDPA.

If you ride your shooting hand thumb on top of the safety lever - and you should - there's no worry of having accidentally engaged the safety.

I prefer an ambi safety on a 1911 period. AAMOF I only own one 1911 that doesn't have an ambi, and that's only because I haven't gotten around to changing it. I want to be able to off-Safe the gun with my left hand so I don't have to take off the safety before doing the transfer, as I would with a single-side unit. I want to be able to hold down the offside lever when shooting left hand only, to absolutely ensure the safety is (1) off, (2) stays that way. To have a safety lever only on one side of the gun just strikes me as basically a bad idea.
Pride and fear are emotions, which hope for an outcome. Outcomes take your attention from the present, where the shooting happens, to the future. It is totally impossible to do anything in the future, because it hasn't happened yet. The key to shooting your best is to be present as the witness of the shooting. Do not judge, do not give yourself anything to live up to. We can only shoot as well as we have trained ourselves to shoot. To try to shoot only induces stress. Be content with your current ability. And accumulate practice to improve that ability. Consolidate, build strength where you feel weakness. We cannot raise our ability until we accept our current limitations. Practice dissolves limitations. Matches simply define where the current limits exist. The game of shooting is all about redefining our limits.

Hello: Get a single sided safety fitted for a spare so when the ambi breaks/bends you can install the single sided one  I have seen the ambi safeties bend from use, then they don't work correctly. Thanks, Eric

that was my point

sorry ... "worry" was a poor choice of words ... as my hand is constantly rubbing it, it's distracting ... particularly when I do a mag change

Been thinking of swaping my ambis to singlesided for a while now.

Just cant bring myself to do it, mostly for the very reasons Duane stated.
