I'm a bit confused about 40 loads using clays. My Lyman tables start @ something like 3.3 gr of clays for a 175gr lead bullet. I loaded 3.5gr of clays with a 180gr FN lead last night. After reading everything here on the subject I think I may be too hot. I'll go lighter on the next batch, but is this safe for my M&P for now? I was using 4.5gr of Bullseye, but it was horribly dirty.

One time I tried to make major with clays in a .40 @ standard OAL.... The case popped. Major PF works just fine with clays in .40 if loading out to 1.18 or more. If you want something to just cycle your slide start with something you know is safe & work from there. There is a boat load of info on this stuff if you enter your query in the BE search bar or google.

If your going to shoot Minor then your ok with Clays in the 3.0-3.5 range
but Major Clays is usually an unpublished load and you could not pull it off
in your gun without a possible kaboom. Major Clays is 4.0-4.5 under a 180 but only
if you load long OAL's 1.19-1.20 which wont fit in your mags or chamber ...

Your going to need a slower powder for Major in you gun ...

From the Hodgdon online data site:
180 GR. HDY XTP Hodgdon Clays .400" 1.125" 3.0 727 26,000 PSI 3.5 847 34,300 PSI

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking for a minor load and from what you guys said I should be OK. I'll probably start @ 2.8 on the next round and go from there.

Since this is a specific load question, I am going to move it out of the beginners forum and into the main reloading forum.

I am running MINOR in my G35. ( PF 131) through a Storm Lake barrel 2.0 Gr of Clays, 180 Gr Bullet cast with a magma bullet casted and lubed with 50/50 white label.

No problems with the load yet.

200gr Zero 3.8gr Clays ave. 848fps 1.15" OAL with with FC100 primer it showed slight pressure signs. switched to FC200 primers and everything looked good.

200gr BBI 3.6gr Clays ave 855fps 1.135" OAL no pressure signs with FC100 primer. very smokey

200gr Zero 3.6gr International Clays ave. 843fps 1.135" OAL FC100 primer no pressure issues at all

200gr BBI 3.6gr Inernational Clays ave. 877fps 1.135" OAL FC100 primer no pressure issues. almost no smoke

When I started playing with the International I was very surprised that it only took 3.6gr to make major. Since it is a slower powder I thought for sure it would require a heavier charge weight. Not sure why it doesn't.

All of my "bulk" chrono testing was with a S&W 610 and SIG P226.

I searched and found these...

By the way. Clays has been my everyday .40 major powder for many moons. Have fiddled with a half dozen others but haven't found anything as good in my G35.

One thing I should add. International is not recommended for pistol use. I played around with it out curiosity after talking to someone that has used it in pistols before.
