Primers sometimes fall on bar instead of primer cup - 550B. Anyone else experience this one in a while? I'm worried I might not see it and it would fall into a spot where the movement of the tool can smash/detonate the primer.

I have not had problems with it, but it could be your plastic piece at the end of the primer tube insert. Unscrew the cap on the primer tube and take out the silver tube. The bottom has a plastic piece on it that could be out of spec. from use.

It could also be an issue with the primer slide bar not coming all the way back to pick up the primer.
1. Handle not pulled all the way down
2. Gunk on the bar causing it to hang up
3. stuff on top of bar
4. dirty primer cup

When mine does that, stopping and cleaning up the bar usually fixes it. If not, replace the plastic piece on the feeder tube. Also check that the primer cup and seating ram hasn't loosened up from the bar. I had that happen before.

I would check what others have said but I would also take the primer bar and fees assembly apart, clean it, and inspect it for debris or breakage.

What I had happen to me just a few weeks back was that the pin that holds the primer cup on had sheared and the only thing keeping it on was powder and oil gunk. I was having problems with it feeding primers correctly and the second I took the primer bar loose and touched the cup.. it fell apart. I had a replacement kit luckily so I was back in business within 20 minutes. Let me tell ya, getting that cup pinned in place is a bit of a task. You have to press pretty hard to compress the spring and get the pin in the right place to lock it in.

That reminds me, I need to call Dillon for a replacement for that and the primer bar spring as well. :D

You can use the press itself as a vice to get the primer cup spring compressed. Just put it together and push in on the handle like you're seating a primer, then tighten the set screw.

I liter 550 priming threads with:

550 Priming Assembly Adjustment Notes:
  • Thoroughly polish frame, wherever priming slide touches it, with green Scotch Brite. (Approx. every 3000 rounds)
  • Wipe off Primer Slide with solvent or alcohol. Leave it all dry.
  • At rest primer slide adjustment: Set so that one primer, dropped down the tube, goes all the way into the Primer Seating Cup, 10 times in a row.
  • Angle of Primer Slide Operating Rod (13869) - Release rod from rollers and swivel it 180º so it's pointing straight up - it should be parallel with the Primer Housing Shield, or maybe outward "a little"; it should not be "inward" at all.
  • Be sure both screws (14530) that tighten Roller Bracket Shell Platform (14280) from bottom (to the Shellplate Platform) are tight!
  • Make sure Priming Seating Punch Assembly is fully bottomed out before tightening screw (13996): Measured from bottom of Primer Slide (13920) to top of seated Primer Seating Cup (13284/5), dimension should be between 2.125 - 2.220 inches.
  • Be sure Priming Operating Rod Bracket (13887) is adjusted so it's within a few thousands of an inch from the top of frame/Toplhead.
  • Be sure the plastic tips of all your Primer Pickup Tubes and the plastic tip on the bottom of the Priming Magazine are seated fully against the tubes.

If you created it you can change it; otherwise, forget it.
