Have been lurking here but this is my first post. Noticed someone talking about
SRM primers in pistol cartridges. I'm new to reloading and have run a bit over 1K rounds of 9mm on a Dillon 650. Using my own once fired brass, 115 grain Berrys RN Plated Bullets, 4.3 Grains VV N320, and CCI #500 Primers. No glitches other than a few that didn't fit the case gauge and they were dismembered and I saved the bullets and powder. The rest of them all went bang and I felt that they were more accurate than the Wally World Federal and Blazer that I had been buying in the past. Question is, I have a boatload of Wolf Small Rifle Magnum primers that I aquired for reloading 223 which I have never pursued. From what I have read, these appear to be ok for 9mm? Is that correct? If so, do I need to tweak the powder load in any way or am I good to go? Thanks in advance for your help..... |

If you're not already close to pressure limits, which doesn't eem likely with that load (4.5gr is book max with a plated 115), you should be fine. Expect maybe a max of 20fps or so gain with some pistol loads and none with others. It seems that slower powders are more likely to see that gain (more complete burn) than something like the N320 you're using. With N105 (extremely slow) in .38SC I was seeing less than 20fps gain going from small pistol to small rifle primers. That can only be a slight increase in pressure with such a small gain. Generally speaking the search function works really well here and you'll save yourself some time using it. I suspect you'll find Small Rifle Magnums to be a little harder than you'd like. I had something like a 4% failure to ignite rate with them in a gun that ran every other style of small primer without issue. Now... I was using CCI SRMs, not Wolf, but... one would expect SRM primers to be fairly hard...
ETA - Chris, check your search... I talked about my experience w/ SRM primers here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31666 This post has been edited by XRe: Nov 5 2009, 03:38 PM -------------------- Dave Re - A-25626 - http://drperformanceshooting.com - http://re-gun.blogspot.com

Thanks for the help!! My biggest concern was if there were any safety issues,
but apparently not. I'll run a batch this weekend and give them a try.... |
