So I've done a bit of search-fu and it seems the TacSol .22 conversion is the cat's PJs. I can use one unit for both a 2011 & a 1911, right? The general consensus seems to be that the TacSol widebody mags are expensive but worth it, can you use other (read: cheaper) single stack mags, though?

I have a Tac Sol unit and I like it. I use it on my single stack Caspian and with the 4 TS mags I have it runs 100%, I have 1 Marvel mag and sometimes it runs, maybe 50%. The unit fits right on my STI double stack but I havent shot it, no mags. The TS mags are good stuff, the Marvel mag is no joy, hate to judge on one example but it seems you really do get what you pay for in this case.-------------Larry

I sold all my metalform "ACE" .22 mags. I am replacing them with the Tactical Solutions SS magazines. Period. The STI mags from Tactical Solutions work perfectly as well. I will buy more of them. They work.....in my experience.
You get what you pay for, and I am one of the cheapest SOBs out there......
Good Luck,

I have had a Marvel and currently have a TS. In my opinion the mags were not the problem with the Marvel, in my case. They were "Colt" .22 conversion mags and good quality as well as expensive. I had to send the CU back to Marvel before it would work properly. I sold it only to help finance something else. Now that I have recovered financially I have a TS because it looked lonely sitting on the dealers' shelf. It is more ammo sensitive than the Marvel but when you find what it likes it runs well, just like the Marvel. They both seem to like ammo that you might not normally think they would/should. Mags are expensive and you need a lot if you are going to shoot steel or whatever but for general use 2-4 is all you should need. Who's to say if other brands will work and if they will work for you just because they work for someone else! You might ask around to borrow other types rather than buy before you try.

Use with both, yes. Infact the 2011 mags are just 1911 mags with blocks
of aluminum on the sides to fill the space. Unfortunately you cant just remove
the sides and use them as SS mags, I tried ..

I've been thinking about a 22 conversion kit as well... Is the consensus that the TacSol is better (i.e. more reliable, accurate, etc.) than the Marvel/STI?
What kind of ammo do they like?

I had the Marvel version from Wilson Combat. Sold it. I did not like the fact the guide rod is used to tightenthe slide to the frame. It changes the poi everytime you clean it.
I have the TS. I use it on my SV-wide body and SS-Wilson frame. I liked it so much, I purchase and new rail for it and put a C-more on top so I can practice with it as an open gun. The wide rails make it tight in my SS holster but works fine in my DOH and Ghost holsters. It is a snap to clean and poi is not changed. I have a long ejector on my guns so I had to modify the SS mags a little on the rear left side so the mag would not hit the ejector. The wide body mags were not a problem. Each mags holds about 13 rounds.
The SS mags will not fit in my STI Trojan.
I like TS stuff so much I purchased their AR upper also.
BTW: Check the classifieds, I think Don Bednorz had a certificate for one.
All their stuff is wickedly accurate and very well made.
