I've been a Glock guy forever, but I think I'm about to take the plunge into M&P world.
I've already decided on the fullsize .45, but then I find out that they are available with a thumb safety. I can't decide about this, as it was never an option with a Glock, and I haven't owned or shot a 1911 in at least 15 years. For a striker equiped pistol, is a thumb safety more trouble than it's worth?
Any M&P.45 owners out there with opinions or experience on this?

I've got an M&P40 with the thumb safety coming, but it's there more as a thumbrest than anything for me. I certainly don't think it's necessary, but it isn't going to hurt anything. The only drawback I found is that you can't get a CTAC for it but that's going to change next month.
Rico continued to take care of himself, his hair, and his gun--with excellent results.

I've been a Glock shooter for a while and recently purchased and M&P 45 compact for CCW. The ergonomics of the M&P are better than the Glock, but be prepared for a heavy trigger pull with long reset. And take a look at the front sight of the M&P you decide to purchase. Smith and Wesson has had a lot of pistols go out with the front sight not centered, it is a dovetail design and they fit them tight. I beat on it with a punch and hammer and it would not move, ended up buying a sight mover.
On a good note, a good gunsmith can get an excellent trigger on an M&P, better than is possible with the Glock. There is an M&P forum that has some info also if your interested.

I use the M&P 45 midsize for everyday concealed carry. I had the trigger worked on and its almost a necessity. You can do some of it yourself to get it down to what the 9's are stock. http://www.burwellgu...triggerjob1.htm.
I have the safety on mine for two reasons. The biggest one is it acts as a thumbrest and helps me achieve the same grip everytime quickly and easily. Secondly is obvious...it's an added safety. Especially since my trigger has been worked on its nice to have on a carry gun.

I have an m&p 45 with the thumb safety. I primarily got the thumb safety model because i was not comfortable with just the trigger safety when i purchased the gun. The only complaint I have about the thumb safety is that it does not have a hard click into the safe position.

I've got a full size .45 M&P with the safety, and a full size 9x19 and .40 without. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the .45 without the safety. The safety works fine and doesn't get in my way, and I've got enough time running 1911s that I don't forget to hit it, but I'd rather have the three M&Ps work the same way. YMMV.
