i recently won a substantial gift certificate at a 3-gun match where i was SO'ing and since i don't have a AR-15 type rifle, i thought i might apply it towards one of theirs. does anyone have any experience with their rifles? also, i need a scope recommendation since i'm going to try competition shooting with it.

There are about as many different options on scopes as there are flavors of ice cream ant lots of threads already on that subject.
As to the rifle the Calvary Arms based on my experience are good units. They are generally lighter than standard all metal rifles and if you are into colors, you have options. I have squadded with the Calvary Arms team two years at Ft Benning and I have not seen any of these units fail at the match.
I do not know your size but the length of pull of the rifle is less than the standard. If you are large this is a negative but if you are smaller or if you want the shorter stock, this is an advantage. Just remmeber that since the stock and lower are one piecce, you are limited as to what you can do about the length if if does not fit you as well as expected.

They have some little assembly quirks...but other than that, they will function just fine!!
I have 2 of the Cav Arms lowers and although I don't use them in competition (I have a CTR-02).....I've thought about it and probably will at some point in the future.
Granted, they don't have a buttstock option, but it is set at an A1 LOP which works for me.
One thing I would suggest and your mileage may vary is to go with an extended safety lever.....I think DPMS has one. The grip is comfortable (set back a little), but with my smaller hands a longer safety switch would be better for me.
I say use it......you won't regret it.

I have a few of them that Cav made for Armalite. They are lighter and are the basis for two of my builds. Put a Clark CF handguard on and it is super lite. One thing I do is put one of the Hogue grips used on Glocks on the grip. Makes it feel better.
I haven't shot any for competition or put a lot of rounds through them to verify durability. But I plan on putting another together for a fast handling 3 gun carbine.

I've wanted a lw rifle for some time, so I recently bought a Cavarms lower and mated it to a Bushmaster superlite 16" upper. Makes for a very nice handling little gun. Not the greatest for most competition, but a lot of fun to shoot! The A1 stock length is just about perfect for me, too.
