Don't know if this is the right place for this, mods feel free to move it if necessary.

Since this is a charity match, I'm putting the call out to anyone coming to the Memphis Charity Challenge to bring me your old eyeglasses and sunglasses. For the past 5 years, I've been involved with the OneSight Foundation. Our main purpose is to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and redistribute them to those in need throughout the world. We work with local Lions Clubs at global clinics using eyeglasses donated from good folks like you. We also fund research projects, and last year St. Jude's found a treatment for a rare children's eye cancer using funds from OneSight.

Halloween is Sight Night, were our members go "trick or treating" for used glasses. Since I'm going to be in Memphis and we all know that wheelgunners are the nicest folks around, I thought I'd let everyone know that I'll be available to collect your donated eyewear.

Here's a pic of me at a OneSight clinic in Bulgaria with a couple of happy recipients.

We can definitely use non-RX sunglasses and off the shelf readers.

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that if your glasses are less than perfect, that's OK. When I was in Bulgaria, we had a patient who was wearing a pair of lenses nailed to a wooden block and held on with baling wire. If yours are in better shape than that, we can use 'em.

I think I have a few ... Just need to dig them up and make sure to pack them...
Getting older by the day and definitely fat. Maybe that explains why I am not getting any faster...

We do both. We have a portable computer system we take to the clinic site which has an inventory of all our glasses on hand, and when we put in a prescription it gives us the 7 closest to that prescription. We then choose which one will work best. We usually take about 100,000 pairs of used glasses to a clinic where we'll see 20,000 to 30,000 people, what's left stays in the country with the local Lions Club to be distributed going forward. The ones that have good frames and bad lenses or vice versa go straight to the Lions here in the US, where they then partner with other volunteer organizations that are able to provide new lenses or frames.

100,000 pairs each for 20 or more clinics a year, and it's easy to see why we're always on the prowl for any used glasses!

Unfortunately, it looks like I'm not going to make it to the match. I'm in the midst of a pretty heinous viral infection, and I can barely get out of bed. I'd still very much like to take your donated glasses, if someone would like to volunteer to collect them for me or pm me for my address and you can send them to me directly.
