As mentioned elsewhere, I have a loaner AR. I'd like to get my skills up to the 300-600 yard range on paper targets. The AR has a 1:7 twist and I'm told a 77 grain bullet is the best for that range. Thoughts on powder to use for .223, and is that the right bullet weight?

Thanks!

55gr thru 77gr will do just fine, out to 600yds. AA2520 powder works well with 55-65gr, as does AA2230.
Contrary to what most think you do not need more bullet weight to get good accuracy out to 600yds, your 1 in 7 "may" like longer bullets better, but try it all.

The Seirra loading manual has good information and can get you started.

for 300-600 yds using magazine length bullets the 77's are really good as are the 73gr bergers and 75 gr hornady's. In highpower matches the most common loads for 77's are using 24.5-25.2 of VV N140 or RE 15. There is a substantial difference in wind drift between a 77gr SMK and any 55 gr bullets and that is what'll make hits more reliable.

I guess it depends on your definition of "substantial"??????

there are many more things to be concerned with to get hits at 300-600 than something less than .75moa at the most.

Well, if the OP cares, I'm stating my opinion as a 3gun hobbyist at best. But I'm saying it as a U.S. Army Distinguished Rifleman, and an NRA High Master with a service rifle. In both of these venues each match has a 20 shot 600yd portion. So when I say substantial, I mean substantial.
