Hey guys, I'd like to purchase a 1911 but have a question. Is there a beavertail grip-safety that would work better for someone with med-large, but very skinny hands? A friend let me shoot his single-stack gun which had an Ed Brown GS and it doesn't 'sit' between my thumb and index-finger like it does for him. No matter how hard I jam my hand in there, I don't have enough 'meat' there to make much contact. I feel like I get robbed of some recoil control because of this, and I guess I could wear a glove on that hand, but I don't like the feel of shooting with gloves on. Does anyone make a beavertail that dips lower, i.e. doesn't have such a high cut, for a 1911? Would an extreme under-cut on the front strap, in-turn, help me make better contact with the beavertail? Seems like that might help me get 'higher'. If so, who makes a (factory) 1911 with the deepest undercut front-strap? His 1911 did not have an under-cut front-strap for some reason, but had everything else it seemed like...

Thanks,
-Kyle

I believe the only manufacturer making grip safeties other than the "high hold" type is King's Gun Works. The Wide Grip safeties are "drop in: types which leave quite a gap between the frame ears and the grip safety. The High Hand Hold Upsweep and Super Hi-Hand Hold safeties require cuts to the ears and blending to install on the frame but result in the custom look of your buddy's Ed Brown safety. As for frames/complete guns...Caspian offers frames (Basic and Race Ready) that have a higher front strap as manufactured but is not undercut. Essex offered low budget frames with enhanced features including a front strap undercut but are in the process of moving and won't be back in production until January 2010 according to their website. Kimber's frames in their higher end models appear to have higher cut front straps (again as manufactured) as do the Les Baer models and frames. Smith and Wesson 1911's have the higher front strap also. SV and STI 1911's have the higher front strap and can be had with an undercut also.

Armscorp's 1911's front strap can be had either way depending on model. Colt, Dan Wesson, Para-Ordnance, Rock Island Armory, and Springfield Armory have stuck with the traditional front strap, although their custom shops will do the cuts for varying costs.

Have you tried a gun with an arched mainspring housing? That may tend to push your hand up and in to the grip more.
