Howdy all,
I have just recently re-entered the "shooting" world. I grew up shooting black powder muskets with my dad (some long number of years ago) but hadn't had any recent shooting fun...that is until:
  • I went and purchased my first "modern" gun...a FNP-9 about 2.5 months ago.
  • Found a USPSA match in Statesville, NC, about 1 month ago.

Man I've been having a blast (only a little pun intended). Getting the gun and going to the range with my sons was cool all in it's own right, but finding that match was AWESOME! I had read a lot of information on this site that gave me a good idea of what to expect. I took the advise to go early and help do the set up. Keep in mind at this point all I had was my pistol and some ammo...no holster or mag pouch or anything else. I went just to see what it was all about and figured the "get there early and help" advice was wise even if I wasn't planning to shoot. I took my son with me.

We both had the best day in recent memory. The people were very nice to us...very friendly. I helped set up, explained that I was new to this and wanted to see what it was all about. I got there at like 10:30 am for a 1pm shoot. My boy had a great time helping out and just running around in general. We assisted in the setup and got a good idea of how things would work as a result. When the match got close, a couple of the guys asked if I planned to shoot and if I had brought my pistol. I of course had, but explained that I didn't have a holster or anything.

Everyone was quick to round up the appropriate gear and get me on the firing line that day. I had the best dang time...I took it very slow (as my scores can attest) and was primarily concerned with safety but it was so much fun. I'm hooked!

I have ordered my CR Speedbelt, a Blade-tech holster and a couple dual mag pouches and am ready to give it another try this coming weekend. I'm not entirely thrilled with the holster, but I'll post about that separately. I just wanted to introduce myself, tell you all Thank You for all the great information on the site, and relate how nice all the folk I ran into in Statesville were. I really appreciate it all. I'm already plotting my next pistol purchase (I'll let my son run my current pistol...he's 13) and figuring out how to work a re-load setup into the mix without divorce.

Thanks Again...
Pooleman

Hey Pooleman,

This Sunday we will have a match at Statesville. We will need some extra help setting up stages. Most of our guys that set up stages are going to be at the nationals. I have the diagrams all printed up so if you are interested in setting a stage all by yourself we would love the help and would assist in any way possible. If you are interested please drop me a PM and I can give you more details.

Glad that you got hooked up with the group there. They are all good guys even Paul once you get to know him :surprise:
If there is anything that I can do to help you along please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
John Lovell

Pooleman,

When you feel the need for a little diversity, check out Central Carolinas Shooting Club .

We offer IDPA and Steel Challenge on the first and second Saturdays of the month.

We're trying to get running with Scholastic Steel Challenge as soon as we can, and your son is eligible to compete on our team.

We practice Tuesday nights 6:30 - 8:30 at the Sportsman in Newport, just west of Rock Hill.

John2A,

I'm going to try to make your match Sunday if you think there's room for an old, slow guy.....

Charlotte is a wonderful place for diversity in shooting! Within an hour's drive you have Spartanburg, Statesville, Salisbury/Rowan Wildlife, Lake Lure, Columbia, Mecklenburg Wildlife, Charlotte Rifle and Pistol, and a club down I77 below Rock Hill. Multiple IDPA, Steel Challenge, USPSA, SASS, NRA Action pistol matches, and a couple of 3-Gun matches.

Feel free to drop me a message here if you are interested in carpooling with some of us to Spartanburg for the 4th Sat USPSA match.
"... real practical pistol is not played for trophies, it is played in the shadows, in dark alleys, in back rooms for hard cash and cheap ugly holsters ..." from Raceguns of Fury, coming to a theater near you!

I'm not sure I could make it down there by 6:30. I work in North Charlotte and traffic heading your way stinks in the afternoon. I may have to give it a shot one day. Do you have anyone else from CLT that does that commute? What route do they take?

Pooleman,

Not sure if we have any commuters from that direction, but I'll ask around...I suspect the regulars either live in Rock Hill or work there. I imagine the Boyd bridge is as bad as the interstate that time of day, but it's another route at least.
