After my gunsmith did the trigger work (3.5lbs), I took my new 1911 back to the range and shot markedly better.

I shot slowly and after each shot I thought about what happened. Made sure I didn't get into a critical/negative state of mind when something didn't happen "right".

One big "AH HA!" was realizing I was kind of "releasing" the gun too quickly. When I maintained control and intentionally tried to maintain my front sight and follow each round all the way to the target, I started grouping much better.

Had fun, burned 200 rnds of .45 ball.

Also realized I need to tone and condition myself better. I could tell my wrists, arms, and shoulders were getting tired and weak.

Put these grips on it after a fellow Texan just gave them to me.

Kinda like the old school look, and they fit my hands.

Nice looking gun....to me, and I am certainly no expert, but I had to put a lot more weak hand/off hand into shooting the .45 than I was used to. Once I locked in both hands, life got better. I need a lot more grip/hand than I do with a 9mm. Good luck.

There is a phase of training, early-on, where it's advantageous to think things though. Eventually, of course, you want to train yourself to NOT think at all, aside form the mental process necessary to watch the front sight.
Pride and fear are emotions, which hope for an outcome. Outcomes take your attention from the present, where the shooting happens, to the future. It is totally impossible to do anything in the future, because it hasn't happened yet. The key to shooting your best is to be present as the witness of the shooting. Do not judge, do not give yourself anything to live up to. We can only shoot as well as we have trained ourselves to shoot. To try to shoot only induces stress. Be content with your current ability. And accumulate practice to improve that ability. Consolidate, build strength where you feel weakness. We cannot raise our ability until we accept our current limitations. Practice dissolves limitations. Matches simply define where the current limits exist. The game of shooting is all about redefining our limits.

Yes, someday I aspire to be unconsciously competent.

There's actually a bit more to it than that, but you've got the right idea. :)
