Anyone using a commander length 9mm 1911 in ESP?

I used one for a couple years, It didnt hold me back any, but I only shot indoor matches on a 25yard total range so never had any long shots. Because standard capacity is 9+1 you frequently get an advantage over 10+1 stages, I think a 5" .40 SS would be ideal though, you get the bigger holes, longer sight radius and still get the 9+1 advantage.

I have one I shoot in ESP sometimes. I think the Commander length slide is an advantage.
The gun cycles so fast that the sights return back very quickly.
None of the ker-chunk you get with a 5 inch 9mm 1911. The shorter sight radius doesn't bother me.
When all else fails...execute the fundamentals. ---- Flex.

I like the feel and balance of a Commander but can get better hits with the longer sight radius and muzzle weight of a G.M. I don't notice the speed or feel of the slide.
A friend has a Combat Commander that he shot very well but it became troublesome and he shelved it rather than replace the extractor, which is all I think it needs.

I have a real pretty custom SVI 9mm Commander high cap. I just changed out the sights on it so I could use it as a carry piece and I will probably shoot it at my next steel match just for fun. The full size 9mm 1911 does have a bit of a kerchunk when it cycles and I have found it to be a little slow sometimes when shooting steel. For IDPA I have found it to be a great gun.
I suppose if I tuned it up a bit it would run a little faster. Mine is Dawson tuned and the recoil spring is a little soft.

You did a great job with that Bill - silky smooth, must be a lot of fun to shoot.

If it doesn't work, just pack it up and send it to Virgil Tripp in Alpine to be tuned together with his Cobra Mags. Virgil is very short bullet savvy.

I had a standard length full width dust cover 2011 frame that I built into a shorty open pistol that I liked enough to fit an IDPA top end to. I’m not real sure how to describe the difference between it and my 5" other than it feels more “crisp”. I do like the way it shoots and it is plenty accurate for the game.

I have a STI in 40 that I use from time to time. I had it put together for carry and IDPA. I have only used it in one match. Really like the feel of the fat grip. I am working on a load with 155gr bullets. Get the slide velocity up and it acts like my limited gun. May even try a few 135 gr bullets. I hope it will be outfitted in time for the Alabama IDPA match in Nov.
