Just curious what people do with there .40 major brass.

If you sort out certain head stamps to keep what are they?

I toss a few specific headstamps, plus anything roll sized, or otherwise damaged. Federal, and Remington shot from my gun get separated to load for major matches. Everythin else gets loaded for practice, and club matches.

I am spoiled.

I get once fired brass (for free) from the the Border Patrol down here shoots and it is either Federal or Winchester.

I shot limited for 3 years and never picked up a piece of brass at a local or any of the major matches I shot even though it was only loaded twice.

Because of this I don't even pick up 40 brass (I have buckets of the BP stuff) and if I do get an odd case I toss it in the brass bucket.

I voted everything but it is not exactly true. For club matches and practices, I tend to use cases that are not split . For a big match, I will stick with one headstamp so I do not get a surprise at chrono. It seems lately that I use winchester because that's what I get from my current source.

I use just about anything. Life is too short, in my opinion, to sort beforehand. I will usually find the A-MERC headstamped brass as it is going through the reloading press. There seems to be more resistance either sizing it or running it up into the powder/belling die.

I load it all, no matter what. When I load it into the boxes I put FC into the junk pile, S&B and AMERC in the practice bin (like I will ever practice LOL) and shoot the rest in matches. I try to limit my match ammo to 9 headstamps or less per match mag load of ammo.....

Majors get all once fired nickel winchester....anything else gets anything with .40 on it. Ditch the obvious bad ones and make sure you reload right and you won't have a problem.

As an extension to this post, does anyone sort .45 cal or 9 mm by headstamp and why?

I've never paid much attention to it, as long at it says .40 S&W. Never had any issues and chronos at four major matches in the past 12 months have been very consistent. Just have to chamber gauge everything due to a tight chamber.

I'm with most, if it says 40, I load it. Not so for the 9 major gun though.

9mm minor.

I would not use nickle plated cases. I hear thet may be harder on dies than brass, so I just lose them.
I ditch FC, as it seems to have a loose primer pocket & has caused me drama's in the past, with primers coming loose during COF.
PMC, Winchester, Remington, all GTG. Everything else is ditched.

Cheers, Ando.

I only got down to sorting headstamps once when I wanted to check a bunch of cases for consistent weight. But to be honest, I don't know what's good and what's junk so as long as it isn't crushed or split, I pretty much use it.

Just being curious here.

I don't know if this has been done and I'm not saying it's worth doing, but is there a list of the more common headstamps and some kind of rating (good, fair, problem)?

Throw away PMC, FC, AMERC, and any brass thats deformed, or roll sized. Load on the 1050. Shoot it.

Chamber checking .40 is a waste of time.

With 45, mostly for BE, I sort all headstamps and discard Amerc. Gives me a chance to examine each case and keeps the feel the same going though the press. Easier to detect a bad primer seating when all the tight pockets (S&B, double dot Win), loose pockets (CCI) and thin walled Rem are segregated.

Load it all as long as it's not split, and the primer isn't loose. Federal, Winchester, and Speer for serious endeavors, the rest go in the practice/shoot it and leave it bucket.

I have a severe case of OCD so I sort all my brass. Up until now I have always given the 40 Short & Weak to some friends. But I bought a Glock 24C for a GSSF match and because I have a Burris Fast Fire and the only mount they make is for a small frame Glock, which they didn't list or I wouldn't have bought it. I would like to hear why FC is junk since I use it fine in my 9MM, in fact the American Eagle 9MM I have for referernce sample is marked FC. The American Eagle 40 I just bought is marked *FEDERAL*. I picked up a bunch of 40 with an A P head stamp that I have never seen before, is it any good? I would love to see a link to the brass that is good and bad.

For the 45 and 9MM I use Winchester for matches as it produces higher velocities in chrono tests and usually Federal for practice. When supply exceeds demand then I give away the off brands.

The was a case of very thin walled FC cases floating around. I am fairly confident they are all shot up or disposed of but I am taking no chances.

FC "may" have primer pocket issues when relaoded a numer of times, I know FC 223 brass (even once fired) will spit primers, so I don't use it. I do use FC in 40 and 9mm, and major 9mm with no problems.

I do however fail to understand why rollsized brass is "bad"... send it to me, I'll use it. its no different than using a push thru sizing die to bring the case back to factory specs.
