I been on that dam tour and took a lot of dam pictures so I probably won't do that, but its worth it to go once.
Just make sure to ask some dam questions if you are interested.

Eat at The Steakhouse in the Circus Circus.

The hotel and casino suck, but this old Vegas restaurant has the best steaks dinners I have ever had.

Take a drive up to Mt. Charleston and have brunch at the Mt. Charleston Lodge. Rent a Harley from Eagle Riders- go for a ride through Valley of Fire via the Lake road. Take a drive through Red Rock Canyon and stop for a nice hike. Take a quick trip to Lake Mead and rent a jetski or just go swimming. Check out the new Prism system at American Shooters. Have a nice dinner at Capo's Italian Restaurant on Sahara or West Tropicana. Go have a beer and watch a great band at the Double Down Saloon. Come over to my house after the days shooting and have a barbeque and scotch tasting. Try one of the Sushi bars or Mexican Taquerias that are everywhere. Eat your way through Korean Town or China Town. Go out to Bonnie Springs' Old Nevada. Drive 80 miles to Furnace Creek in Death Valley, or 120 miles to Zion Nat'l Park.

I can go on all day.

I like VegasOPM's list, but I can add a few that are free, or nearly free:

Free coupons are everywhere for the Car Museum at the Imperial Palace. If you like old cars, this is worth seeing.

Ethel M Botanical Cactus Gardens in Henderson. I was able to put a name to a lot of the plants I saw in the desert. The conservation display is impressive. If you are a chocolate lover, there is also a free factory tour.

Valley of Fire State Park (about an hour NE of Vegas) was awesome, not just for the scenery, but the ancient carvings and petroglyphs from the valley's early inhabitants were amazing.

On the 'not free' list:

I have never had a bad experience at a steakhouse in Las Vegas, but my top 3 have to be 1. Charlie Palmer's (in the Four Seasons in Mandalay Bay), 2. the Striphouse (Planet Hollywood Casino) and 3. Delmonico (Venetian Hotel).

The Gospel Brunch (Sundays) at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay is an experience. Great Food & great music.

Shopping - I LOVE the shopping. I can always find what I want in Las Vegas.

This is a very helpful thread, please keep em coming. We'll have a lot of half days off so it would be wise to do "tourist" stuff rather than be in the casinos.. :surprise:

You have to eat while there so enjoy it.

Maybe no "best" but:

Hard to beat Delmonico. Food, atmosphere, cellar and presentation are all top shelf. As is the cost.

Not on everyone's list but outstanding meat is at Gallagher's.

Joel Robuchon had Chilean Sea Bass on the menu. No fish better... This one too is pricey.

Enjoy.

We try to get to Las Vegas once a year in December or January. If we spend 4 hour total in the casinos the week we're there it's a lot. Way too much to see to stay indoors.

I've got to agree with Vegas OPM. Read Rock Canyon is just a couple of minutes past the range. Absolutely breathtaking. If you've never been in the desert before, after you've been here you will be able to conceive the vastness of it. If you're nutty enough to climb the shear walls of the bluffs, you won't be alone. Just remember, when you're 400-500 feet up that shear wall, it's 20-30 minutes to the nearest hospital.

We just discovered Fire Valley this year. The formations are are beautiful and if you drive slowly and quietly you will see wild burrows and maybe a wolf or two. If you decide to get out and walk around be careful, this is the desert, the local snake population does not take kindly to being stepped on. Oh, BTW, a lot of the movie from Star Trek Generation (I think) were shot here. When you see Captains Kirk and Pecard battle the alien that is trying to destroy the sun of this planet it was there in the Valley of Fire that they actually were fighting it out.

If you've got a whole day, take a trip to Death Valley. Along the way you've got to stop at Scotty's Castle. Many of the gangsters from the '20s vacationed there. Interesting story goes with the building of the castle as told by tour guide. You must take the tour.

Before you get too far outside Las Vegus you are going to come across area 51. You still can't get in. If you try to climb the wall of the valley you will have more military company than you can shake a stick at and none of them happy with you. There are motion detectors all over the place.

If you look a bit in the distance in this area you will see indentations in the ground that were caused by the underground atomic blasts maybe a quarter of a mile in diameter.

Where ever you go in the desert make sure that you take plenty of bottled water with you. Oh, you might take a few apples with you if you see any wild donkeys.

The last trip to Vagas we took was in August......Never again!!!!!!!! December sounds great!

I have heard the Read Rock Canyon is awesome. The next trip we are for sure going to make it out there.

I also want to take one of the helicopter tours out to the Hover damn and down to the Grand Canyon. Heard these were very awesome also.

Red Rock canyon at dusk.
Indian Springs at any time.
Both are great hikes with different things to see. Try to get up close to the walls in red rock canyon.

Check out the Mormon temple on East Bonanza, day or night.

At night, go past the temple to the end of the road where it abuts the mountain, and see the city sparkle beneath you for free...and you may catch me out there with my travelling companions. I love that view.

Ethel M's in Henderson (just down the highway) has tours and tastings, and a really cool cactus garden. REALLY neat if you're from the East and haven't seen cacti bigger than the potted ones in the markets. It was free when I was last there in 2004.

Saturday evening and night may offer auto racing at the Bullring at LVMS, we checked that out before, pretty fun local racing in the shadow of the cup track.

i got hitched there.

i think i was drunk for approximately 5 days straight. not just buzzed..... like DRUNK. it was very entertaining.... i finally figgured out what a bum trys to do every day. my body finally went into F**K you mode on day 5 1/2.

my normal routine (wedding permitted)

get up around 9am
go have some breakfast with some mamosa's..... like 5-8 of them to start the day off and scare off any scurvey with the OJ.
take a BC powder.
go out to casino.
gamble. win a bunch, think im the MAN!.... then quickly loose it again.
continue to work on free drinks the entire day/afternoon/night.
eat somewhere in between gambling/drinking at a buffet that small ethiopean children would think/dream about when they die.
continue the gambling/drinking thing till approximately 3-5AM or im about to pass out.
repeat.

this wasnt the only thing i did. i did the indoor skydiving thing (neat) watched (slept really) thru an Imax, rode the 'coasters on top of whatever that one tall one is,did the pirate show thing on the sidewalk.......

best thing i did: watched Tiger Army, Revolution Mother, and another rockabilly/punk show at the Lexor
(besides getting married :roflol: )

wedding cost about 1000 bucks after it was all said and done. included tux rental, limo ride with everyone, pictures, and pastor. we got hitched @ the valley of fire, which i recommend very much to just go see.
lost about 4-5K gambling. meh.
overall a MOST excellent time.
no elvis wasnt our pastor..... it was for her sister though :)
