Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I only have recently found this forum and have been having a read - a wealth of knowledge here. I shot for about a 8 months in 2007 mainly just blasting away at the range but let my license lapse, Got it back again a couple months ago and have been taking things more seriously - I want to compete in IPSC matches at some point in the future.

I have a Ruger MK3 22/45 which I bought because it was cheap and ammo is cheap as well. It lets me compete in the matches that my club holds and I can practice without too much cost. So far I have been completely self taught - picking up bits here and there but making it up as I go. I've finally decided to get some expert opinions on my shooting so I'm bracing myself for a heap of criticism (which is a good thing :))

Anyhow, these are my two videos:

Sorry about them being sideways but I have no video editing software on my computer (not using Windows) and the computer is so old it would have a heart attack if I did get some. Also due to being constrained to the shooting bays I can't get too many other angles.

In the first video I have my head quite far down which is the way that makes the sight picture steadiest for me. In the second one I've tried to keep my head up which is what I see most shooters doing in the pics and videos.

Please point out anything I am doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is what I see…..

1 - Your stance needs to be more aggressive leaning forward. Watch your body movement with every shot, you are ratcheting backwards with every shot fired.

2 - Shooting at the same target over and over through the same magazine isn’t helping you learn much. In USPSA matches a major part to shooting well and quickly is the ability to grip the gun and aim it at the target. In your video you point the gun at the target, then fiddle around with your grip, finally you start shooting. Your grip should be completed and solid as soon as the gun is up in front of your face so you can start shooting right away. Try this the next time you go practice. Start with the gun in your strong hand only at a low ready position. At the start signal, build your grip before the gun is all the way up and once the gun is up in front of your face the sights should be pretty much aligned on the target and you can break the shot. Work out the kinks at home with dry fire by simply building your grip as you move the gun up and out then look at the sights to make sure they are aligned. If the sights are not aligned after building your grip and bringing the gun up and out, your grip, arm position, or stance is wrong.

3 - Even though shooting a 22 is cheap practice, you do not learn the proper grip pressure needed to manage the recoil of a larger caliber pistol. I have always used the methodology of “Practice with what you compete with” and it has served me well in all the competitive activities I partake in.

This is just scratching the surface, but gives you some stuff to work on.
