A guy at my local IDPA club does a unique spray on finish for guys who shoot in SSP but want something grippy that does not move them into ESP.

He used to work in the Marine industry and does a 3 layer coating. He has done it for years on glocks and I approached him about doing it for AR mags. Recently, I dropped an AR mag when sweaty on a stage and was unhappy to say the least, time added is no bueno.

Here are 2 mags, one Pmag and another USGI alum mag.

I am going to have him do a few more comp mags I use, only add another inch of coating, the pics show approx 2 inches high of coating, I think 3 would be perfect!

A close up of the surface itself:

About the coating from the owners webpage:
"The blue enhanced slide at the top of every page is an actual Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image done on a coated plastic spackle knife by a very satisfied customer. The slide has a 1mm scale to reference in the image. Note the matrix of trapped particels that allows moisture/dirt/oil to escape and stand away from the control surfaces of the hand. Tacti-grip actually feels BETTER when it is wet!"

I did likewise. If he posted prices on his site and shipping instructions and turnaround time, he might have less email to answer since a mag is a mag and a grip is a grip.

I think that is steep too.

I had the mags done as a trial and didnt pay shipping.

Next match I see the guy at, I will give him my thoughts on the pricing structure, while I dont know what the cost of the materials is, I agree, its a bit much per mag to say the least.

Thats a great looking texture, and I'm sure it is a remarkable compound and technique for applying it, but $32 buys a LOT of skateboard tape.

Home Depot/Lowes type stores sell a spray grit for steps that works pretty well. Not as aggressive but good enough and a lot cheaper.

Just a thought I've had.
I drive by an auto/truck customizer and they have a sign out about RHINO coatings for bedliners.
I've often wondered if this would be a good grippy surface for the bottom half of mags and what they'd charge.
I also have wondered if anyone makes a DIY spray can to apply to small areas, spa steps, tools etc...
Something like a spray on plasti-dip for tools.
At those prices I'd like to find something I could do myself.

Found this:

$32.00 for a quart of it at jcwhitney. Could do hundreds of mags with a quart.

Very nice. Looks like my Glock grip I did. My Pmags will coordinate with my pistol now when shooting carbine/pistol stages. :)
