Hi,

can someone tell me what the main difference between the double disk kit and the adjustable charge bar for the Lee auto disk is?

The adjustable charge bar is for loads that cannot be obtained using either the double disk or single disk-in other words those loads that fall in between. As indicated below it can be used for all charges up to a certain limit. However, the adjustable charge bar cannot be used for a lot of the loads possible with the double disk-loads with big charges that go beyond the capacity of the adjustable charge bar. However, it is my understanding that by experimenting with various combinations of the disks not published by Lee you can achieve results. I haven't done this though.

The double disk kit uses two fixed volumes to adjust powder (each disk will have a series of progressively larger holes/volumes). The adjustable charge bar has a vairable volume via a sliding bar attached to a screw. Go with the adjustable charge bar so you do not have to change disks all the time.

There are some powders that will meter better with one or the other. For instance, a powder may meter best with the disk but not so well with the bar. I have trouble getting consistency with Solo 1000 in charges under 4gr with the bar.

I tried the adjustable charge bar and found that it does not work well for small volumes and an exchange of emails with Lee confirms this. But, if you are looking at using double disks, you are probably beyond the small volume limitation.

Here is a trick one tech from Lee suggested to create your own adjustable volume. If you need a volume that is between two size apertures, drill a small hole into the edge of the larger hole and screw in a small fine thread screw. You can then adjust the screw in and out to decrease/increase the volume.

If you buy an extra set of disks for this and drill out several, you will have a completely adjustable set of disks.

The double disk is for larger amount of powder, typically for rifle calibers, that cannot be obtained by a single disk.

Several years ago I tried to use the charge bar when I started reloading 45 ACP with Unique. It measured so inconsistently that I ended up with a squib and a ring in the barrel (the barrel had to be replaced). I dumped the full batch of ammo and retired the charge bar - I never used it again.

Their adjustable charge bar is of no use at all IMHO. The mini disks and dbl disk kits are a different story.
