Just wanted to show off the Protype Billet Uppers I just finished building. It's designed to be more stable in the front end for Hopefully better accuracy. It is longer than a normal upper which helps when mounting the scope. It is also heavier so I won't be using it for "runnin around" or tactical/lightweight type ARs.
I'll be testing it tommorrow.
These versions are side chargers because it's stronger but I might try a normal CH one in the future if these work out. The rail is A3 height. CH version would have to be higher I think.
These are still gonna need some work with the final tweaking/lightening/blinging but they should be functional. It took a lot of time to engineer and machine these in my spare time but at least I didn't have to spend much $$.
I'd like any comments good or bad. I won't get upset I promise :D
Enjoy!

I like it, very sexy. The ejection port looks small but it's probably the angle. What about a left side charging handle version?

I imagine it might not lend itself to the structural rigitidy the OP was looking for.

THAT IS A GOOD LOOKING RECEIVER. VERY INTERESTING CONCEPT. :goof:

I don't always shoot a rifle, but when I do... I prefer a Firebird. Stay accurate my friends.

I get that, I guess I'm probing for the version I might want to buy when he goes all JP with his design, lol.

Is that .223 or .308? Looks good by the way.

Thanks everyone.
It is a 223. Barrel is a custom Lilja 1x8 3-groove I made a few years back only then it was 1.200" diameter and 24" long. Now it is a bull diameter and 18". FFT is rifle length and fits only because the gas port was set forward about an inch for the long barrel. I only remembered the gas port deal after I cut it back to 18"--OOPs! It still ran fine today with 55 grn plinker loads w'2230, 50 Grn Nos BTs with N135, and 69 sierras with Varget.
I'm going to have to get a Mid-Length FFT or trim the one on there back and relocate the bipod stud reward or put a rail on to get the bipod further away from the tube. The bipod touches without putting spacers under the FFT.
I thought the 69s would shoot the best with the fast twist but it liked the 50 grn Noslers the best. Had one short stroke with a plinker load and some failures to hold the bolt back with the plinkers.
Ejection was 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock with the brass showing minor mouth indention on some of the brass-not bad though. No brass marks on ejection port--which is lower than normal by the way.
Group size was about normal for a good AR. Anywhere from 3/8 -1" @ 100. I should have cleaned the bore and chamber before I went to the range but I just ran a snake through.
A 308 upper like this one is very possible. All I need to do is tear my 308 apart and start inspecting and blueprinting.
Left side bolt handle is very possible. I still haven't decided if I want it open slot or covered-nonrecipricating.
I was thinking of doing a left handle-no gas system with raised rail in 20MOA taper. I know it sorta defeats the purpose of the AR having no gas system but I'd like to see if it's any more accurate without a gas hole in the barrel. It's also easier to make AR barrels that way.
I don't think I'll use it for 3-gun unless I change the config/weight, but I'll have it at the Tri-Gun in August for people to look at.

Been getting a lot of questions about will it work with a normal AR barrel and extension.
The answer is yes.
It won't work with normal 2-pc handguards. The best setup would be a low profile gas block under a FFT.
Here is a pic of Prototype #2 on a POF lower and the 16" RRA barrel with YHM FFT that I was selling. I had to modify the FFT to work with the different length and flip up sight gas block.
This is not an ideal setup but it is all I have:
