So I have been practicing loading weak handed and things seem to be coming along pretty well. I have been bringing the gun down to my waist when doing so, copying Taran Butler’s technique from my 2006 Multi-gun video. However, in reading some of the past threads on shotgun reloads it seem some guys are keeping the gun up at the shoulder while they reload. Am I missing anything with what I’m doing and should I practice loading while keeping the gun up, or is loading with your gun at waist just as good/better? Or is it good to be able to do both with advantages for given situations?

I do it with the gun still shouldered, it simply eliminates one step and I'm able to look the rounds into the loading port. Much the same way we are told to watch our pistol magazine into the magwell. However with a PG stocked shotgun i can see where lowering it to waist level or tucking it into your armpit would keep the gun from pivoting in your hand and dropping the muzzle to the ground.

I reload with my shotgun sorta in between. At the waist is just a long way from the shoulder. On the shoulder is for me a bit unstable when reloading. In the shooting position your elbow is out there and without your support hand the gun moves around a bit. When I remove my support hand to grab shells I simply pivot my shooting hand elbow down against my side and load the shotgun right there. Pivot back to shooting position is very quick and dropped shells for me is reduced with this technique.

I find that when I load with the SG up high, gravity works against me and sometimes the 3rd round will slide down in my hand too far for me to get it into the tube. To combat this, I keep the SG shouldered, but lower the muzzle a little, and roll the gun a lilttle to get a better visual on the port. This way the rounds are more horizontal and don't try to slide down as bad. As I start to load the last round I am bringing the gun back up on target, and as the last round is loaded we are ready to go back to missing targets, so we can reload some more!! I know it would be more consistant to keep the gun high, and I watch KM all the time, but I know I'm not doing something right for that round to slide down, so I had to find something that works for me. If you are at A6 and you see a SG in the dumpster, you will know for sure that it didn't work right. To the MD, I will try to keep the #$&* down to a quiet muffle while this is happening.

I tuck my PG Benelli in my armpit when loading weak hand. I do bring it out during the last round and re-mount to the shoulder while pressing in the last shell into the tube so I'm ready to go the moment the last shell is in.

I do just that with my M2 & supernova, but lower the muzzle to about 45 degrees, I run normal stocks on both guns, the loading port gets closer to the belt which also helps I find.

it works good & eliminates the time taken to re-shoulder the gun.

OK week hand experts, I also have been practicing too BUT here is the big problem I'am not constant I will put 2 rounds in my gun shoot 1 and load 8 and shoot 1 my best is just a little over 10 sec. and my worst is around 15 sec. I understand the more you practice I assume the more constant you will get so my question is a 10 to 12 sec. a fair time to do this type of reload in. I'am trying to get my game together for Trapr's and Kurt's shot gun match

There is a video of Robbie Johnson (AMU shooter) doing weak hand reloads. He is very fast with no wasted motion. Try the search function to find it.

Now that I'm starting to figure out how to edit videos and post them to YouTube....heres one of Rob Romero that we shot a few months ago while goofing off at the range. Shoot 1, load 8 and Shoot 1 in 6.22 seconds. Hes broken into the high 5's a few times but no video proof.

10 - 12 seconds is a good starting point. Your times will decrease with more practice. Then when you get good, try loading on the move without looking at the loading port. If you are dry-firing at home, just hi-step in place while trying to load. I tried that once for whatever reason and found it really made it much more difficult than just standing in place.

For the most part, the fastest I can do four from beep to last shot is 3.88. That is - from low ready, at the beep shoot one, load four while walking 6 feet, then shoot one.

If you can get a reliable reloading average of 1 round per second, you won't be far behind the top shooters when the course of fire is done. That is as long as you don't miss a target, fumble a reload, or have any other brain farts that seem to come up during a course of fire that has people watching and a clock running.

If you really want a challenge and increase your skills, get a 20 ga. and shoot it. Your 4 rd. holders will hold 5 rds of 20 ga.. Get good at grabbing five of those little buggers at a time and load them, your fingers will later find the 12 ga. rounds to be a breeze to handle.

No matter what Romero does he will always be ingrained in my mind, on his knees, Eric Lunds ammo in hand, and then suddenly its not in his hand.
