A buddie of mine has a M1 Garand. We tried chambering a round from the clip and it only went in 3/4 of the way.
What do you think???
Dirty chamber or a common problem with the M1? Should it go to my gunsmith? I was trying to save him a trip. Any advise would be helpful.

Is that M1 chambered for 30-06? Or is it 308? Silly question, but that was the 1st thing to come to mind. 30-06 going into 308 chamber would go in about 3/4.
Does this only happen when stripping a round from the clip? Or can you drop a round into the chamber?

When loading with the bolt locked back, it usually needs a little shove to help it along. When actually shooting mine's been 100% for over 10 years now.

first, check to be certain it is chambered for 30-06 not 308. Then check to be sure it is not an aftermarket barrel, that might cause it, then check to see if the chamber is rusted, corroded or pitted, that might cause it, finally you might have to use small base dies to reload the ammo or shoot factory stuff..hope this helps..

The problem could also be a separated case (top portion of case still in breech). Old 30-06 ammo (World War II, Korea, and even later) utilized primers which contained mercury. Over the many years of storage, the mercury vapors break down the brass and make it brittle. Sometimes, when one of those old rounds are fired and the extractor pulls on the rim, the case breaks in two and ejects just the lower part. I've seen this happen to others as well as having it happen to myself. Companies like Fulton Armory sell an extractor that feeds in like a regular round and has claws which expand after going thru the case neck of the broken case. Then by pulling on the bolt (or standing on it in my case), the broken brass is extracted. Keep in mind, this is not a case blowing up when being fired, but a case pulling apart when the extractor applies tension.
Shine a bore light down the muzzle and look up into the chamber to see if this is the problem.
Good Luck!
