I set up a CAN (clubhouse area network) for the Area 7 champtionship, so we could post scores to a local web server rather than Martin Luthering them to the wall. Although this was done along with Palm scoring, it is a completely separate item and neither is dependent on the other.

We only had 3 work stations set up for checking scores, but that was enough to service everyone who wanted to use them - which was a steady stream of shooters as they left the match.

The main benefit was not "screen vs. paper", but the ease of posting new scores. I was able to post a new set of results in about 30 seconds whenever there was meaningful additional information. I never left the clubhouse with scores in the EzWinScore database that were not posted to the clubhouse network.

For example, a shooter submitted a division correction - I made the change on the spot, and posted new results while the shooter waited. Just try that with paper.

I'm convinced this is an easier way to go if you have someone to set up the network, and can find some old computers with network cards.

Here's the setup we used:

- Low end desktop (Dell 2400) running RedHat Fedora Core 3 w/Apache and MySql.

- DHCP server enabled on the desktop (we did not use DHCP in the router)

- DNS/BIND set up on server to that any URL would resolve to our results page

- Web based upload and another page to display scores (overall per division, per stage, and a competitor summary) developed using PHP/MySQL.

- Several "junker" systems (anything with a network card and a browser will do) - competitors used a web browser to check their scores.

- Wireless router, DHCP disabled

- Laptop running EzWinScore for scoring. This system was not used as a results display station for the competitors.

The code is available free upon request, but I would recommend that you get a Linux capable person to install and configure the server - or, perhaps someone can write the same thing for Microsoft IIS.

Rob,

This was my first encounter with Palm scoring, and a clubhouse PC to review scores. Both get an A+ in my book. Viewing scores on the PC was a great idea on many levels.
