Ok, this might sound like a stupid question, but I figured I'd ask. I compete a lot in USPSA, and have shot a single Steel Challenge "mini-match" (it was a charity event) with my standard Production rig, but I figured I might try to start shooting Steel Challenge regularly with Rimfire (just an old Ruger Std that I have). I keep reading that Rimfire competitors don't need a holster and typically bring their guns up to the stage in a pistol rug.

Thing is, even if you don't end up drawing from it, is it still acceptable to keep a rimfire gun in a holster between stages rather than a bag/rug? Seems like it would be, and seems like it'd be more convenient, but I just wanted to ask before I went out there like an idiot and holstered up :).

Thanks!

I run a holster. I use the same holster that came with my xdm 5.25 for my buckmark it is a pretty loose but holds it fine....I'm not doing jumping jacks with it though.

Hello: I know for Ruger Rimfire you must bag your pistol. I think the same goes for Steel Challenge. There is a group here who shoot rimfire and some of those guys use a holster. You can find some at Power Factor Shooting. Sean also sells some mag holder spacers for rimfire. It maybe a good practice rig for you? Thanks, Eric

No, there is no requirement in Steel Challenge to bag rimfire pistols. It is acceptable to use a holster.

The problem is finding a really cool one so the rimfire blaster doesn't get get holster envy when it's next to the centerfire guns - :roflol:

I think someone somewhere modified an old Aluminator and associated mag carriers....

Thanks guys. It'll just be a cheapo Fobus rig I have for the gun. Nothing fancy, but I'm just used to the convenience of carrying the gun around on my hip to the point that bagging it every time would seem awkward.

Thanks again. My first "real" Steel Challenge match will be this Saturday (like I said I did a charity match with my M&P production rig before, but it was only Outer Limits and Smoke and Hope and only 3 runs per stage instead of 5). Figured this would be a cheap and fun way to work a another match in every month :D.

I shot Open Rimfire for my first SC format match a couple of months ago. It was one of the most enjoyable matches I've ever had. Unfortunately it was an over two hours drive and they don't have it every month.

I wish there was more steel shooting in my neighborhood.

Bring lots of ammo and have fun!

My son and I just did the West Coast steel Challenge. I used a bag for my 41, he used a holster for his buckmark. Hard to find decent holsters that work but the black dog that is mdke for the ruger can be made to work well or an optic buckmark with a little grinding.

Lumpgravey: The closest steel challenge that I have found to the bay area is Motherload Pistol Club in Mariposa. They shoot every month and are nice folks

Sacramento Valley Steel has Steel Challenge matches monthly at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center in Sloughhouse, Ca. from May to October on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

Thanks for the suggestions/info guys. I'll keep those in mind. The SC I shot was in Soledad which was 2+ hours from home. Mariposa is even farther and Sacramento is about the same.

Being an old coot now, I'm not ashamed to balk at any drive more than an hour. You should have seen my belly-aching about the Soledad match :roflol: . Plus I usually shoot the USPSA match at Richmond on 3rd Sundays.

Black Dog Machine has a nice holster for the new Ruger 22/45 that might work well for your Standard.

I draw my M&P .22 from holster at our steel challenge matches...its good practice for USPSA and that's why I shoot steel anyway

My friend made a little .22 plug for his CR Speed WSM II holster and it works with his Ruger mkiii pistol.
Push the envelope, watch it bend.
