Im sure this has been discussed many times, but I didnt see anything in the first few pages so.....

Im shooting the Rockcastle shotgun match at the end of June and I am looking to pick up some Briley extended chokes before I go. I shot CMMG last weekend and used all 3 of the factory chokes that I brought with me. They did just fine, but I would like to get something that is a little easier to identify while they are in the gun, and easier to remove when the time comes.

Heres what Im thinking.

Cyl- for close clays/light steel and aerial targets

Light Mod- for a general purpose choke. This will probably stay in the gun the majority of the time.

Improved Mod- This is the tightest choke I had at the CMMG match and it took care of the small shotgun targets that were strategically placed next to the "no shoot" pistol targets. I dont know if going all the way to a Full choke would be necessary.

Please give me your opinion on what you think about the selections Im looking to make. I am open to suggestions. Thanks fellas

You are dead on with what I use. Except I almost never use the Cyl choke just LM and IM. Once in a great while I use my turkey choke on the spinner.

Never cared for a cyl choke, they tend to pattern unevenly. I found a skeet choke throws a more even pattern that has a diameter just slightly smaller, but doesn't tent to have the pattern holes of a cyl choke pattern.

I use a diffusion choke instead of a cyl. It's pretty impressive when you pattern it. I also keep an IC for shooting flitecontrol stuff as the LM wrecks the wad and actually opens the pattern up a bit in my gun vs the IC. LM 90% of the time, and a full just in case. I have a few others that came with the gun that I never uses. I just got the Diffusion, and LM from briley to fill in the holes.

I also keep some #6 pheasant loads, flitecontrol #6 turkey loads, and fiocchi #8 spreaders in my bag so I have plenty of options.

What about an IC to go with the LM?

Put in an IC or LM and leave it. Spend the money saved for chokes on shells practicing and you'll have one less thing to think about stepping up to shoot a stage. If you feel you need more power have a box of #6 1 1/4 oz shells. If you have to have more than one choke get an IC and a full.

+1

I keep a Skeet, Light Modified, and Light Full on hand. I've never used the Light Full in a match and rarely used the Skeet.

I've only ever used LM and diffusion, and sometimes regretted using diffusion.

I just bought one of everything after spending a bunch of time shooting different types of steel on my range at varying distances.

At CMMG I used a Full, LM, and an IC. I Also carry a Diffision, Skeet, and IM. Diffusion is a must have for those hoser stages
