The gun we built for the 2010 Gator Classic in Louisiana was a big hit so we were given the honor of doing it again. The match is our favorite of the whole year so building this gun is very important to us. We used a spiral fluted bull barrel with our usual slide lightening and a few additional frame cuts. STI Bomar style rear sight with DP FO front .100 wide. The slide is tri-topped with the arrow pattern serrations on top. We try to do something unique and different for the match gun, I hope you all like this one.

How's copper canyon holding up? what is the molecular composition?

OK, because there is misinformation out there on the "error-net", yeah, imagine that, I thought I'd clear the air about the finish known as "Copper Canyon" and clear up horse wash like this:

If you do a little deeper investigation into the copper canyon finish and that gun in particular, you will find that the slide cracked on that gun very prematurely. I was told that the copper canyon finish hardened the metal so hard that it became very brittle. The gunsmith that I talked to said that he wouldn't use that finish again for that very reason. The old standby's are old standby's for a reason. They work and they last. I have duracoated guns and saw wear after the very first dryfire session. I followed the instructions to the letter. Some have better experiences than mine, but that is what I found with the various "paints"

Copper Canyon is a PVD type of coating. It's done at relatively low temps considering other finishes in the firearms industry currently being applied. The metallurgic compound is TiAlSiN. It's an extremely difficult process to master and I only know of one place that could 1/2 way do it. That facility isn't a coating operation, they manufacture the machines that do it. They are well versed on what their machines are capable of doing, just not totally capable of controlling them. The Copper Canyon is such a finish that during the vapor disposition process there is a very small window in which an order of operations must be performed for a specific color such as the one shown above. PVD finishes do absolutely NOTHING to alter the molecular composition of the substrate metal beneath the finish. Anyone saying the process hardened the slide or made it brittle has no clue what PVD finishes are or how they work. As far as I know, there were only ever 2 gunsmiths in the country offering that finish, FGW and M2i. I know I didn't say that, and I know Matt well enough to know he didn't say that. We no longer offer that finish because out of 5 guns we sent out for the finish, only the one pictured above came out right. Most had to be refinished. The gun featured at the top of this post is now back in my possession. It was a match prize gun and I was able to trade the winner out of the gun with a custom single stack build. He's a 1911 shooter and never could get use to the feel of the 2011.
I currently don't know of anyone offering the Copper Canyon finish, though I wish I did as I am fond of it. Currently, we offer multiple finish options. Cerakote being my current favorite for cost and longevity purposes. Duracoat is barely better than Krylon. KG Gunkote would be an alternative. If you know how to apply Cerakote properly, thickness is a non issue. If it were, I wouldn't be able to use it on my guns. Aside from Cerakote, we do Parkerizing in house also. I believe the Cerakote offers a more consistent and durable finish than the Park. We also offer Hard Chrome and multiple other PVD style finishes in varying colors. I'll be putting together an Open gun soon that will be flashy and unique in color which is something we are known for.

Bobby,

Thanks so much for the clarification. I really appreciate all of that info. It's a shame it is so inconsistent. I want it so much! Even something similar.. lighter or darker. don't care as long as it's hard as nails and is different from the usual suspects. I am really excited to see what is in the pipeline for these new colors you speak of. What you do is amazing, and I for one, acknowledge your efforts in everything you do. can't wait to buy the "presidential package" soon! keep keepin on
